Steel Shop Painter

What you will do:
The Painter will paint metal weldments and assemblies; use drawings, specs and/or verbal instructions as well as exercising judgment and experience to plan and accomplish goals; paint fabricated products as well as cut steel using industrial painting equipment; ability to check his/her own work; meet production deadlines, be flexible, time conscious and be able to move from project to project with minimal supervision; work closely with shop management; other duties as assigned.

What you need:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 1 to 2 years of Industrial Painting experience
  • Ability to operate industrial painting equipment
  • Ability to obtain medical certification to wear a respirator per OSHA standards
  • Ability to use appropriate measuring instruments to the task
  • Ability to interface with other departments to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to maintain a clean work area
  • Ability to follow and apply all applicable safety requirements to comply with regulatory agencies
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand for up to 10 hours a day
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane
  • Must possess own tools appropriate to the job being performed

Experience:

  • industrial painting: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • * Prepare surface for coating by sand or steel shot media blast, sanding, chemical wipe, wire brush and any other means necessary.

* Apply primers, base coats and sealers within required specs and mil thickness.* Properly mix multi-component systems per manufacturers specifications.* Apply mid and top coats according to manufacturer and job specifications meeting mil thickness requirements.* Clean equipment and maintain a clean working environment at all times.* Accurately monitor and record environmental, material usage and time.* Provide assistance with other projects as needed * The successful candidate will report to the Shop Foreman and General Manager and be able to take direction from quality assurance personnel. You should be quality minded, motivated to meet goals and deadlines and be energetic enough to keep up with production demands. Must have good problem solving skills, be dependable and punctual, must be able to communicate and work well with others.
Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Promote and adhere to the Core Values and Behavior Code.
  • Prepare units for painting by cleaning, sand blasting, sanding surfaces and masking as specified.
  • Paint surfaces of metal parts using spray painting equipment adhering to specific surface preparation and painting techniques.
  • Apply a variety of coatings including enamels, epoxies, urethanes and military coatings from various paint manufacturers.
  • Mix paint precisely to manufacturer and customer specifications.
  • Remove inconsistencies or imperfections using grinders, hand tools and sanders.
  • Grinds, chips or brushes off excess weld, splatter and rust.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and specifications regarding paint requirements.
  • Inspect parts using and interpreting inspection equipment, such as anchor profile gages, dry film thickness gages to verify finish requirements are met.
  • Accurately document and record all required data needed to comply with each specification.
  • Operate spray booth, oven and ventilation system per specific instructions.
  • Remove inconsistencies or imperfections using grinders, hand tools and sanders.
  • Grinds, chips or brushes off excess weld, splatter and rust.
  • Stage and move parts within the paint area using a forklift, hand truck, hoist or crane.
  • Responsible for achieving good speed of execution while maintaining quality workmanship in a wide range of fitting activities.
  • Maintain work area, equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Promote company goals with a focus on Safety, Quality, and Production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Including but not limited to:

  • Confers with supervisor and reviews painting schedules
  • When the supervisor is not present, assigns duties to complete the daily department work and schedules
  • Oversees department activities and revises work assignments to meet production schedules and contract priorities
  • Explains department procedures, specifications, and demonstrates use of equipment and testing to new employees
  • Assists with interpreting procedure changes and work orders for workers
  • Reports substandard equipment performance to supervisor or maintenance personnel.
  • Verifies conformance of finished work to specifications
  • Confers with other departments to resolve painting problem
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Must be able to wear steel toed shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Must pass respirator physical and be fitted for face mask. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
